Lesson 7: Variation Revision Notes

Lesson Objectives

Let's look at why every living thing is special and different. By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Grade C: Know what variation (the differences between living things) is.

  • Grade B: Tell the difference between inherited variation (traits passed from parents to children) and environmental variation (differences caused by where and how an organism lives).

  • Grade A: Explain why a baby plant or animal often looks like its parents because it has inherited some of their features.

Understanding Variation

Variation is the word we use to describe why each living thing, even if they are from the same type of plant or animal, is unique.

Types of Variation

  • Inherited Variation: These are the details you are born with, like the color of your eyes or the shape of your leaves, which come from your parents.

  • Environmental Variation: These are differences that happen because of where you live or things around you, like getting taller because you eat healthy foods or a plant growing in the sun.

Looking Like Parents

Baby animals and plants get a mix of details from their mom and dad that make them look a bit like both. This mix is called genes (tiny instructions inside every living thing that help decide how it will look and grow).

Variation All Around Us

  • Continuous Variation: This is when a trait can be lots of different sizes or amounts, like all the different heights of people in our class.

  • Discontinuous Variation: This is when there are only a few options, like having curly or straight hair.

Keywords Explained Simply

  • Continuous: A kind of difference that can have many sizes or amounts.

  • Discontinuous: A kind of difference where there are only a few possible types or ways.

  • Inherited: Details that are passed from parents to their children through genes.

  • Environmental: Things that happen because of the place where a living thing is or what is around it.

Variation is what makes every plant, animal, and person special. When we look around, we can see how these differences make our world an interesting place! Remember, every creature is unique, and that's what makes life so amazing.
