Lesson 1: The Circulatory System Revision Notes

Lesson Objectives

Let’s explore how our bodies are powered by an amazing system called the circulatory system. Students will learn to:

  • Grade C: Recognise the different parts of the circulatory system (a group of organs and tubes that moves blood and other things around in our body).

  • Grade B: Describe simply how and why blood is pumped around the body (how the heart moves blood and why this is important for us to stay alive).

What is the Circulatory System?

The circulatory system is like a big city's road network but for our blood. It helps carry all the important things like oxygen and nutrients to every corner of our body.

Parts of the Circulatory System

  • Heart: A strong muscle in the middle of your chest that works like a pump to send blood around your body.

  • Blood: A red liquid that carries oxygen and food to all parts of your body.

  • Blood Vessels: Tiny tubes that blood travels through. There are three types:

  • Arteries (carry blood away from the heart),

  • Veins (bring blood back to the heart),

  • Capillaries (tiny blood vessels where oxygen and food move to the body, and waste like carbon dioxide gets picked up to be taken away).

How and Why is Blood Pumped?

The heart pumps blood so every part of our body gets the oxygen and food it needs to work. Without this pumping action, our cells would not get what they need to keep us healthy and alive.

Keywords Simplified

  • Circulatory System: The heart, blood, and blood vessels working together to move blood around the body.

  • Pumped: What the heart does to push blood through the blood vessels.

  • Oxygen: A gas that we breathe in from the air which our body cells need to create energy.

  • Nutrients: Food parts that our body uses for energy and to grow.

The circulatory system is very important for keeping us alive. It works all day and night without us even thinking about it, moving blood everywhere it needs to go! Remember to eat healthily and stay active to keep your heart and blood vessels strong.
