Lesson Objectives

Let's learn about smoking, why people do it, and how it affects our health. By the end of this lesson, students will know:

  • Grade B: Name the main chemicals found in cigarettes. These substances are harmful to our bodies.

  • Grade A: Understand and describe some of the dangers smoking causes to the body. Smoking can lead to serious health problems.



What's in a Cigarette?

Cigarettes contain many chemicals, but here are a few major ones that are especially harmful:

  • Tar: A sticky brown substance that collects in your lungs and can cause cancer.

  • Nicotine: A drug that makes cigarettes addictive. It speeds up your heart and raises your blood pressure.

  • Carbon Monoxide: A gas that takes the place of oxygen in your blood, making your heart work harder.


Dangers of Smoking



Smoking can cause a lot of health problems, including:

  • Cancers: Like lung cancer, throat cancer, and many others.

  • Heart Disease: Smoking damages your heart and blood vessels, making heart attacks more likely.

  • Lung Problems: Like bronchitis and emphysema, where breathing becomes very difficult.

  • Other Effects: Smoking can also cause problems with fertility, make wounds heal slower, and even lead to gum disease.

Smoking doesn't just hurt the smoker. Passive smoking is when you breathe in smoke from someone else's cigarette, and it can harm you too.
