Lesson 4: Series and Parallel Circuits Revision Notes

Lesson Objectives

Today, we're going to look at two ways that electrical circuits can be set up and find out what happens if there's a gap in the circuit. You'll be able to:

  • Grade B: Identify a series circuit (where components are in a single path) and a parallel circuit (where components are on separate paths).

  • Grade A: Explain the effect of a gap (like a broken bulb) in each type of circuit.



Series Circuits

  • In a series circuit, everything is connected in a line, one after the other.

  • If you have a set of lights, and one goes out, they all stop working because the circuit is broken. It's like a train stopping because the tracks are not connected.


Parallel Circuits

  • A parallel circuit has branches, so electricity has more than one path to follow.

  • If one light goes out in a parallel circuit, the others keep working because they have their own paths for the electricity to travel.



Why Use a Switch?

  • A switch in a circuit is like a door that can stop or let electricity through. If the door is open (the switch is off), the electricity can't go through. If the door is closed (the switch is on), the electricity can pass and make things work.


The Effect of a Gap in a Circuit

  • In a Series Circuit: A gap, like a missing or broken bulb, stops all electricity in the circuit. Nothing works until the gap is fixed.

  • In a Parallel Circuit: A gap only affects the path it's in. The rest of the circuit works fine because the electricity can go through the other paths.
