Lesson 1: Lab Safety Revision Notes

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Grade C: Recognise hazards (dangers) in a laboratory (a place where scientific experiments are done).

  • Grade B: Describe how to protect (keep safe) yourself from these hazards.

  • Grade A: Explain the importance (why it is important) of lab safety (keeping safe while doing experiments).

Introduction to Lab Safety

Lab safety is essential for protecting yourself and others while exploring science. It involves rules and behaviours to prevent accidents and ensure a safe learning environment.

Key Lab Safety Rules

  1. Wear Safety Glasses: These are special glasses that protect your eyes from harmful substances or broken glass.

  2. Keep Area Tidy: Making sure the space around you is clean and clear to prevent trips (falling over) and spills (liquid falling out of its container).

  3. Tie Back Long Hair: Keep your hair securely tied up to prevent it from catching on equipment or catching fire.

  4. No Eating or Drinking: Avoid consuming food or drinks to prevent contamination (making something impure) of experiments or ingesting harmful chemicals.

  5. Keep Equipment to One Side: Organise your workspace so you have enough room for your experiments.

  6. Report Accidents Immediately: Tell a teacher right away if something goes wrong for safe handling and cleanup.

Safety Equipment and Its Use

  • Goggles: Special glasses that shield your eyes from dangerous chemicals or pieces of broken glass.

  • Lab Coat: A protective coat that guards your clothes and skin against spills.

  • Gloves: Protective covering for your hands when you need to touch something hot or chemicals.

Dealing With Accidents

If accidents like spills, breakages, or fires occur, report to a teacher immediately for proper action. It's important not to try handling dangerous situations on your own.

Key Words and Definitions

Why Lab Safety Matters

Understanding and following lab safety rules are vital for preventing injuries and accidents. It makes the lab a safe place for learning and experimenting, which is an important part of being a responsible scientist.

Quick Quiz

Remember, learning about lab safety is the first step towards a safe and successful exploration in the world of science. Keep these rules in mind as you continue your journey of discovery.
