Lesson 2:Hazard Symbols Revision Notes

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this KS2 Year 6 Hazard Symbols Revision lesson, students should be able to:

  • Grade C: Identify hazard signs and symbols (recognise different warning signs used in science to indicate danger).

  • Grade B: Describe their meaning (explain what each sign means and the type of danger it represents).

  • Grade A: Apply your knowledge about hazards to new chemicals (use what you know about hazard symbols to understand and handle new chemicals safely).

Understanding Hazard Symbols

Hazard symbols are like warning signs that tell us about the dangers of different chemicals. They help us know how to use and handle these chemicals safely.

Key Hazard Symbols and Their Meanings

Why Hazard Symbols Are Important

Hazard symbols provide quick, recognisable warnings about the dangers of chemical substances. They ensure that people from different language backgrounds can understand the risks without needing to read detailed descriptions.

Key Words and Definitions

  • Hazard: A danger or risk.

  • Concentration: How much of one substance is mixed with another. High concentration means a stronger mixture, which can be more dangerous.

  • Acid: A substance that can be corrosive and is characterised by a sour taste and the ability to turn litmus paper red.

  • Corrosive: Substances that can destroy or damage other substances they come into contact with.

Test yourself

Learning about hazard symbols is a crucial step in ensuring your safety and the safety of others while conducting experiments. Keep these symbols in mind as you continue your journey in science.
